Anxiety disorders are among the most common referrals for mental health services for children and youth. Dealing with stress and anxiety at school is a common challenge for children, and particularly for adolescents, as they learn to navigate the social and academic pressures of high school. Â However, anxiety can manifest in a range of different behaviours which may lead to maladaptive coping strategies. This workshop will support teachers and other professionals to identify signs of anxiety in children and adolescents, to develop tools and strategies to build resilince in children experiencing anxiety, and to encourage mental health promotion and self-care in all students.Â
Dr. Louise Deault, PhD, is a licensed child psychologist who has been working at Summit School, a specialized school for neurodiverse students, for the past 10 years. She completed her graduate studies in the School/ Applied Child Psychology program at McGill University. Currently, she holds the position of Psychology Department Head at Summit School. Dr. Deault’s work aims to support students in developing tools to promote self-regulation and manage their anxiety, and to assist teachers and other school staff in conceptualizing how anxiety can present in unique ways and how to best support students in the classroom.  Â
Tania Palma Fernandes, PhD Candidate, is completing her doctoral studies in the School/Applied Child Psychology program at McGill University. She has over 10 years of experience in working with children and adolescents with varying learning differences and mental health needs in public and private schools as well as other clinical settings. As a psychological consultant at Summit School, Ms. Fernandes supports students and school professionals in identifying and implementing strategies to promote emotion regulation with the goal of improving the student’s classroom functioning and general well-being.
This session is appropriate for teachers, classroom assistants/ integration aides and other professionals working with children and adolescents in schools.
