COLLOQUE | Competency 1: Let's talk about it !
Bécancour, QC 12 février 2025

Join us for the annual conference for English as a second language teachers, dedicated to developing Competency 1: To interact orally in English.

C1: Let’s talk about it is a training day crafted to empower English teachers to reinforce, practice and effectively teach oral interaction skills in their classrooms.

How can we engage students in meaningful oral interactions?
How can we teach students effective strategies to participate in exchanges and build a coherent message?
What activities can make their learning more authentic and significant?

Participate in discussions on planning, differentiation and evaluation in a collaborative workshop setting. Throughout the day, we will have the opportunity to share your best practices and gain inspiration from fellow ESL teachers.

Our workshops cater to various levels, including elementary cycles 2 and 3, as well as high school cycles 1 and 2.

By the end of the day, participants will walk away with:

  • A clear understanding of the C1 competency;
  • Stimulating activity ideas to develop the C1 competency with students;
  • Insights into engaging and motivating students in the ESL classroom.

Don’t miss this opportunity to enrich your classroom practices and to connect with ESL teachers from different schools.

Bio

Cassandra Roveto
attended Concordia University and graduated with a Specialization in Early Childhood and Elementary Education degree (BA). Initially, she envisioned beginning her career as a homeroom teacher in an English school board, but her journey took an unexpected turn. For the past seven years, she has had the privilege of teaching at Collège St-Jean-Vianney in Montreal. The school offers a bilingual program for grades 5 and 6, featuring two co-teachers in the same classroom at all times. While her partner conducts all the French classes, Cassandra focuses on teaching ESL and various subjects in English, including Social Studies, Science, and CCQ. This collaborative approach has enabled her to create enriching ESL learning experiences through interdisciplinary activities. A passionate storyteller and film enthusiast, Cassandra often incorporates these elements into her classroom, fostering creativity and engagement among her students.

Clara Séguin graduated McGill University in 2021 with a B.Ed in TESL. While studying, she worked as a substitute teacher for the CSSDM, gaining first hand experience while completing her Bachelor’s degree. She was also an active member of Le Gris Montréal, an organization that aims to demystify what it means to be LGBT+ in our day and age.

In July 2021, she moved to Germany to go teach in a Waldorf school in Hamburg. She taught ESL to german students from grades 1 to 7. Coming back to Montreal in 2023, she started teaching Enriched English at Collège Sainte-Anne Dorval, teaching grades 7 and 8. You will most likely find her in a comfy chair with her cat and a good book or a podcast, or exploring Montreal as if she was a tourist.

Emilie Duchesne graduated from Bishop’s University with a double major in English and in Education.  She taught ELA for a few years in the public sector for the Eastern Townships school board and is now teaching ESL at École secondaire de Bromptonville since 2016.  Aspiring to be a leader of change in her school, she is on the pedagogical innovation committee. She is passionate about pedagogy and motivates her students through various projects, all while encouraging technology within the classroom. Her specialty is in cycle one, but she is currently experimenting with integrating leadership activities with her secondary 5 group. You can find her in the mountains hiking or skiing in her free time.

Marie-Eve Vincent graduated with a B.Ed. in TESL from McGill University in 2003. After teaching English as a second language at the CSSPI for a few years, she joined the English department of the Collège de l’Assomption in 2008. She has mostly taught at the secondary 2 level (core and enriched), but she also has experience in secondary 1,3, and 4. A flexible classroom and a gradeless method of evaluation are two major changes that she implemented to improve her students learning experience in the past years. She is also acting as a tech coach and a pedagogical leader at the CLA. Reading is her passion, she is always looking for the next book to add to her classroom library.

Meghan M. Robertson graduated with her B. Ed. in TESL from McGill University in 2010.During her studies, she completed a high school internship in Hong Kong (China) and then studied pedagogy for a semester at Melbourne University in Australia. Since 2011, she has been an ESL teacher at Collège de l’Assomption. She has spent the majority of her career teaching in secondary 5 (core and enriched) and secondary 1 (enriched). She was a member of her school’s “Commission pédagogique” for several years.   In order to reduce student academic anxiety and improve student learning accountability, she has adopted a gradeless method of evaluation and a flexible classroom.
