Anglais-SECONDAIRE : Building Durable Skills for the Digital Future in the ESL Classroom
Bécancour, QC 07 janvier 2026

How can English as a second language teachers strike the right balance between using technology, including artificial intelligence, and maintaining engaging, student-centered learning?

How can we ensure digital tools support—not replace—the meaningful relationships that foster language acquisition and personal growth?

This interactive conference invites secondary ESL teachers to explore thoughtful approaches to technology integration that enrich classroom experiences by enhancing the development of durable skills.

With a focus on durable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, flexibility, problem-solving, and metacognition, participants will engage in workshops and discussions to reflect on the role technology plays in student-centered learning.

How can we plan activities that continue to prioritize dialogue and connection in this digital world?

How can the various digital tools help foster transferable skills in language learners?

Throughout the day, participants will:

  • Identify effective strategies for integrating digital tools in ways that enhance ESL learning experiences;
  • Explore learning activities that develop durable skills;
  • Reflect on their current practices and evaluate how to enhance their lesson plans to meaningfully integrate digital tools to support both language development and skill building.

Don’t miss this opportunity to enrich your classroom practices and to connect with ESL teachers from different schools.

Bio

Emilie Duchesne graduated from Bishop’s University with a double major in English and in Education.  She taught ELA for a few years in the public sector for the Eastern Townships school board and is now teaching ESL at École secondaire de Bromptonville since 2016.  Aspiring to be a leader of change in her school, she is on the pedagogical innovation committee. She is passionate about pedagogy and motivates her students through various projects, all while encouraging technology within the classroom. Her specialty is in cycle one, but she is currently experimenting with integrating leadership activities with her secondary 5 group. You can find her in the mountains hiking or skiing in her free time.

Marie-Eve Vincent graduated with a B.Ed. in TESL from McGill University in 2003. She began her teaching career at the CSSPI before joining the English department of the Collège de l’Assomption in 2008. During her time in the classroom, primarily teaching at the Secondary 2 level (core and enriched) and also Secondary 1, 3, and 4, she implemented innovative teaching strategies such as a flexible classroom and a gradeless method of evaluation. She also enthusiastically served as a tech coach during 4 years. Driven by a desire to have a broader impact on teacher development and classroom practices, Marie-Eve recently transitioned to her current role as a full-time pedagogical leader at Collège de l’Assomption. Her mission is to empower teachers to innovate in their pedagogy, provide comprehensive accompaniment to new teachers, and facilitate the thoughtful integration and use of AI in the educational environment.

Meghan M. Robertson graduated with her B. Ed. in TESL from McGill University in 2010. During her studies, she completed a high school internship in Hong Kong (China) and then studied pedagogy for a semester at Melbourne University in Australia. Since 2011, she has been an ESL teacher at Collège de l’Assomption. She has spent the majority of her career teaching in secondary 5 (core and enriched) and secondary 1 (enriched). She has been a member of her school’s “Commission pédagogique” for several years.   In order to reduce student academic anxiety and improve student learning accountability, she has adopted a gradeless method of evaluation and a flexible classroom.

Mathieu Péloquin graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Studies and from the Université de Sherbrooke with a Bachelor of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language. He has been teaching ESL at École secondaire de Bromptonville since 2011. Always passionate about using technology to foster student learning and skill development, as well as to optimize his own teaching practices, he has more recently focused on exploring the potential of artificial intelligence in education. He has attended several professional development sessions to deepen his expertise in this area. Since the beginning of the 2025–2026 school year, he has been combining his ESL teaching duties with a new role as an Educational Technology Consultant, working with the Pedagogical Services Department to assess and improve digital practices in the classroom. In this role, he also supports teachers and students in using AI tools effectively and ethically. Outside of school, he enjoys playing hockey weekly and embraces his nerdy side through tabletop role-playing games, such as Dungeons & Dragons, and card games like Magic: The Gathering.
